Sydney couple charged over alleged failed $5 million heroin import

A couple from Canley Heights faced the Downing Centre Local Court on 10 January 2025, charged with attempting to smuggle 10 kilograms of heroin into Australia.

The investigation began when the 52-year-old man and 53-year-old woman arrived at Sydney Airport on 9 January 2025 from a flight originating in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Australian Border Force (ABF) officers identified irregularities in the linings of their suitcases during a routine baggage inspection. Further testing confirmed the presence of heroin concealed within.

The pair were each charged with importing a commercial quantity of heroin, contrary to Section 307.1(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth). They were remanded in custody and will appear again at the Downing Centre Local Court on 12 March 2025.

Detective Acting Superintendent Dom Stephenson of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the heroin’s estimated street value was $5 million, translating to around 50,000 street-level deals. He noted the serious harm heroin inflicts on individuals, families, and communities, reaffirming the AFP’s dedication to combating the drug trade.

ABF Superintendent Elke West highlighted the dangers of heroin, calling it a highly addictive substance that causes immense damage to lives and families. She emphasized the ABF’s commitment to intercepting illicit substances and preventing criminals from profiting at the expense of vulnerable Australians.

Both agencies stressed that their message to drug traffickers is clear: all attempts to smuggle drugs into Australia will be detected and result in significant legal consequences.
