Deputies seize 200 lbs. of meth in traffic stop near Howe

Sheriff’s deputies in Grayson County made a major narcotics seizure in a traffic stop on US-75 near Howe last week.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office said when a deputy made a traffic stop just before 4 a.m. Wednesday, approximately 200 pounds of methamphetamine packaged for delivery was discovered.

“This is one of the biggest busts that I can remember in Grayson County on a stop like this since I’ve been here,” Captain Mark Kosemund said.

That 200 pounds of meth equates to a whole lot of money.

“1 gram of methamphetamine, depending on where you’re at, will run for about $100 per gram,” Kosemund said. “When you take that in the context of 200 pounds with roughly 450 grams in a pound, that is a lot of meth. It’s a lot of money that has been taken away from the cartels.”

It’s roughly $9 million worth to be specific.

Kosemund says that work like this directly contributes to keeping people in Texoma safe.

“There’s a lot of mixed feelings about drugs right now but drugs literally hurt the most vulnerable people in our community,” he said. “We go out every day to try to get them off the streets.”

He added that this incident also speaks to a bigger problem of all sorts of different crime traveling up and down Highway 75.

“Especially on US-75 being such a major drug trafficking corridor,” Kosemund said. “Our deputies are trained and they consistently look for any type of signs of further criminal activity. It’s not just the traffic stop.”

The driver, who deputies said was identified as an undocumented immigrant, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly located and taken into custody.

The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
