Cocaine smuggling network dismantled in historic GTA bust

Peel Regional Police have taken down a major cocaine smuggling network operating in the Greater Toronto Area. The year-long investigation, dubbed Project Pelican, led to the seizure of 479 kilograms of cocaine. Officials estimate the street value at $47.9 million—making it the largest drug bust in Peel Police history.

The investigation focused on commercial trucking routes used to move cocaine from the U.S. into Canada. Peel Police worked closely with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and Homeland Security Investigations. Together, they tracked and intercepted large cocaine shipments at key Ontario border crossings.

Between February and May 2025, this effort led to two major seizures. At the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, officers found 127 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a trailer. Shortly after, they seized another 50 kilograms at the Blue Water Bridge in Point Edward. Both drivers were arrested immediately with support from the RCMP.

Additionally, follow-up searches in the GTA turned up more cocaine and two loaded semi-automatic handguns. Police arrested nine men from various towns across southern Ontario. These suspects now face 35 charges related to drug trafficking and firearms. They have all appeared for bail hearings at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah highlighted the significance of the operation. “Thanks to strong leadership and teamwork, this transnational criminal group no longer threatens our communities,” he said. “This is a historic moment for our service.”

Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner agreed. He said the success of Project Pelican sends a strong message. “Organized crime will not find a safe haven in Ontario,” he declared.

CBSA Southern Ontario Director Michael Prosia also emphasized the power of international collaboration. “This case shows what we can achieve when we unite against criminal networks,” he stated. “We will continue working together to keep dangerous drugs off our streets.”

Project Pelican proves the value of cooperation between local and international agencies. By combining intelligence and resources, law enforcement dealt a major blow to organized crime.
