Cocaine dead drop arrest Sydney

Federal police have arrested a man after allegedly seizing a sports bag he believed contained $10 million worth of cocaine in a sting operation near an inner-city Sydney park.

Officers say the 40-year-old suspect retrieved the bag, which had been placed inside a parked van as part of a dead drop — a tactic historically used in espionage. However, the bag no longer held its original 30 kilograms of cocaine. Police had swapped the bricks for a fake load before allowing the suspect to collect it.

He returned with the bag to Double Bay, where officers pursued and arrested him following a short foot chase. Encrypted communication devices, anabolic steroids, and the fake cocaine were seized from his home and a nearby apartment.

The man, Jonathan Lindsay Fagan, faced Parramatta Local Court on Saturday. He declined to apply for bail and was remanded in custody. He was charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border-controlled drugs, an offence that carries a potential life sentence.

His case is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday.

The arrest followed a three-month investigation by the Australian Federal Police into an alleged transnational drug trafficking syndicate. According to Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden, the operation disrupted the group’s local activity.

“This result should serve as a serious warning to potential drug traffickers in Australia – don’t get comfortable – because the AFP is constantly working to target and disrupt your criminal operations and bring you to justice,” he said.

The cocaine’s estimated street value was nearly $10 million.

The sting came just one day after a separate arrest, in which another man was allegedly caught arriving in Sydney from Dubai with more than 10 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a suitcase.
