Two jailed over one of Australia’s largest methamphetamine seizures

Victorian-based criminal syndicate members who attempted to smuggle more than a billion-dollars’ worth of illicit drugs into Australia have been jailed in Melbourne. Two men, who were behind the coordination of one of Australia’s largest onshore methamphetamine seizures in 2019, were collectively sentenced to a total of 53 years’ imprisonment, after facing the County Court of Victoria today (Wednesday, 18 December, 2024). The pair was charged with serious drug offences over the failed import of about 1.6 tonne of methamphetamine and 37kg of heroin concealed inside a consignment of stereo speakers sent from Thailand to Melbourne. The syndicate coordinator, an Elwood man, 42, was sentenced to 32 years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 21 years. His co-offender, a Darley man, 43, was handed a 21-year jail term, with a non-parole period of 14 years. The duo was charged under the AFP-led investigation, known as Operation Circinus, which started after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers located illicit drugs inside the consignment when it arrived at the Melbourne Container Examination Facility in April, 2019. In total, authorities seized 1.596 tonne of methamphetamine and 37kg of heroin, with an estimated street value of $1.197 billion and $18.5 million respectively. At the time of the seizure, this amount was equal to almost 16 million drug deals. The majority of drugs were found wrapped in green and gold tea packaging. It remains one of the largest seizures of methamphetamine in Australian history. The syndicate members were arrested on 4 December, 2019, after AFP officers executed search warrants across Melbourne at Darley, Sunshine West, Brooklyn, Elwood and Murrumbeena. The two men were convicted in the County Court of Victoria on 16 May, 2024. They were each charged with the following offence: Importing a Commercial Quantity of border control drugs, contrary to section 307.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). AFP Acting Commander Donna Tankard said the seizure was one of the biggest in the nation’s history and highlighted the strength of the collaboration between the AFP and its law enforcement partners. “This seizure and the subsequent arrests of the criminal syndicate operating in Melbourne are a true testament to the incredible work undertaken by the AFP and our Commonwealth law enforcement partners to stop transnational serious organised crime in its tracks,” a/Commander Tankard said. “I would like to thank all of our members who spent countless hours as part of this investigation and those who continue to work tirelessly to keep dangerous drugs off our streets, out of our communities and out of our homes.” On average, close to 12,000 Australians are hospitalised from methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin use every 12 months. A/Commander Tankard said the outcome under Operation Circinus should serve as a warning to people involved in drug trafficking. “We know that Australia remains a lucrative target for criminals driven by greed and profits to import harmful illicit substances into our community. “These criminals were calculating, and these criminals were coordinated. And that was all part of their undoing. Now they are paying the price for their crimes. “The AFP, together with our Commonwealth, state and international law enforcement partners are always keeping watch, and remain one step ahead of those who attempt to import illicit substances into our country.” ABF Acting Commander Ben Michalke said ABF officers remained committed to stamping out organised crime’s attempts to proliferate the illegal global drug trade. “The criminal actors who have today had an appropriate punishment meted out, conspired to defraud the Australian people, and put an unprecedented number of lives at risk,” Acting Commander Michalke said. “Methamphetamine and heroin have disastrous consequences in the community and we are pleased to have worked closely with our global, and state and federal partners to ensure Australia’s borders remain secure.” 18 December 2024 Source: AFP

India’s largest drug bust: 5 tonnes of Meth seized by Coast Guard off Andamans

In a coordinated air-sea operation, the Indian Coast Guard has seized more than five tonnes of synthetic narcotic contraband (initial testing indicates Methamphetamine), off the Andaman and Nicobar islands, WION has learnt. The suspicious foreign-origin fishing vessel was identified and tracked by an Indian Coast Guard Dornier-228 maritime surveillance aircraft, following which fast patrol vessels were tasked to intercept and apprehend it. The foreign-origin vessel with six foreign crew members was apprehended in the Andaman Sea in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone and has been taken to Port Blair for further investigation. Port Blair houses the Joint Command of the Indian Armed Forces, which is the country’s only tri-services(Army, Navy, Air Force) command, and the regional headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard’s Andaman and Nicobar Command. There are more than 550 islands of varying sizes in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, making it a highly challenging region to monitor for illegal activities. The latest seizure of contraband comes barely a few days after India conducted its largest-ever Maritime Security drill – Exercise Sea Vigil-2024. The exercise involved the Indian tri-services, six central ministries, and 21 law enforcement agencies from the state and central levels. The latest operation was carried out amid harsh weather at sea, owing to the storm that is brewing in the Bay of Bengal, off India’s East Coast. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean concentrated into a depression at 8.30 am Indian Standard Time, Monday, 25th November. In Meteorological parlance, depression is associated with stormy weather, gusty winds, and rough sea conditions. This is the single largest contraband seizure in the nearly five-decades-long history of the Indian Coast Guard, which has been at the forefront of maritime law enforcement in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone that is spread across 2.4 million square kilometres. For context, the Indian Coast Guard’s annual seizure of contraband (all kinds of drugs) usually hovers between 1-1.5 tonnes. However, in the latest operation, 5 tonnes were seized in a single day, from a single vessel, making it unprecedented. Based on estimates from previous Meth seizures, it can be said that the latest Meth consignment weighing more than 5 tonnes could have a market value running into billions of US dollars (far exceeding Rs 8400 cr). 25 November 2024 Source: Wionews

77-Year-Old NSW Man Charged with Alleged Methamphetamine Importation in WA

A New South Wales man is expected to face Perth Magistrates Court today charged with allegedly trying to import about 3kg of methamphetamine into Australia, concealed in a backpack. The AFP arrested and charged the man, 77, on 23 October, 2024, after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers at Perth Airport allegedly found the illicit drugs when he arrived on a flight from Thailand. When ABF officers examined the man’s luggage, they allegedly detected anomalies in a laptop backpack. This included the unusual weight of what was an empty bag, a strong smell of glue and irregularities around the seams. An ABF narcotic-trained detection dog also provided a positive reaction to the backpack. Upon further inspection, ABF officers allegedly found two packages containing a white crystalline substance concealed in the backpack’s lining. They immediately alerted the AFP and forensics tests allegedly showed there was about 3kg of methamphetamine in total. The AFP charged the man with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely methamphetamine, contrary to subsection 307.1 of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth). He first appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on (24 October, 2024) and is expected to appear again today. The AFP, through its international network, is investigating the source of the drugs. AFP acting Superintendent Chris Colley said the AFP and ABF worked tirelessly to ensure criminal syndicates did not exploit international air travel to traffic illicit drugs into Australia. “If 3kg of methamphetamine had reached the community, it could have facilitated at least 30,000 street deals of 0.1g, worth an estimated $2,775,000*,” a/Supt Colley said. “Across Australia, there were 10,100 methamphetamine-related hospitalisations in 2021-2022 – which equates to more than 27 every day, on average. This has an impact on the health system that can negatively affect the entire community**. “Methamphetamine and other illicit drugs cause immense health, social and financial harms, which is why the AFP and our partners work tirelessly to stop these substances from reaching Australia.” ABF acting Superintendent John Sweet said officers were highly adept at identifying suspicious activity at the airport, using sophisticated detection methods combined with good old fashioned officer intuition. “This detection should serve as a warning to all travellers, regardless of age, who wish to run the gauntlet and attempt to bypass our border controls – we will stop you in your tracks and together with our law enforcement partners we will ensure you find yourself before the courts,” a/Supt Sweet said. 22 November 2024 Source: AFP
