An Australian Border Force officer has been charged in a major corruption case, accused of accepting bribes to help smuggle cocaine into Australia. The arrests were part of Operation Proctor, a multi-agency task force investigating officials who aid organised crime.
Authorities allege that ABF supervisor Rita Gargiulo, 50, conspired with 67-year-old Cosmo Commisso to traffic 6.9 kilograms of cocaine. Investigators say Gargiulo used her position to bypass security measures, ensuring the shipment went undetected. In return, she was allegedly rewarded with cash and luxury goods.
Both suspects face multiple charges, including bribery and aiding the importation of border-controlled drugs. If convicted, Gargiulo could face life imprisonment. Two other men, aged 25 and 48, were also arrested in connection with the operation.
Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney stressed that corrupt insiders are critical enablers of organised crime. He warned that law enforcement agencies will continue cracking down on those who exploit their positions for criminal gain.
Authorities are expanding their investigation to uncover any additional insiders involved in similar smuggling operations, reinforcing Australia’s commitment to tackling corruption within its borders.
